La obsidiana

Leyenda mexicana que relata porque se le dio el nombre “obsidiana” a esta roca de origen volcanico.

Reseña: La obsidiana es una roca o mineral de origen volcanico compuesta por silicatos alumínicos y oxidos sílicos. Sus usos varian entre objetos de ornato como espejos, figuras que imitan modelos prehispánicos, formas de animales y muchas más. También se utiliza como adorno en construcciones de pisos y paredes y hasta en plazas de ciudades.En un pasado remoto se fabricaban puntas de flechas y lanzas.

Cuenta la leyenda mexicana que en los tiempos de los indígenas, cuando la vida era muy difícil y el hombre tenía que luchar contra inmensas bestias salvajes para poder alimentarse, ocurrió un acontecimiento que cambió la vida de esa comunidad. En cierta ocasión salieron los hombres de ese gremio a cazar un gran mamut para el abastecimiento de varios días; mientras las mujeres y los niños se quedaban en la cueva en compañía de los ancianos.

Esas cacerías llegaban a durar varios días por lo que los ancianos tenían la obligación de cuidar a las mujeres y niños, pero como no tenían armas para defenderse buscaron por toda la cueva algo que les ayudara a defenderse del ataque de unas hienas.

De pronto Obsid el pequeño hijo del más valiente guerrero se percató de una piedra negra y filosa que estaba en el suelo; la tomó y la amarró a un palo que tomó de entre escombros, lo lanzó con gran fuerza y enorme fue la sorpresa de todos al darse cuenta que se desplumaba una hiena mientras las demás salieron huyendo.

El ingenio y creatividad de Obsid lo llevaron a recibir los honores de la tribu, fue nombrado guerrero de la aldea y en su honor le llamaron a aquella piedra “Obsidiana”, siendo ésta utilizada posteriormente para la elaboración de instrumentos de caza.

En el Pico de Orizaba, sobre el flanco oeste se localizó una superficie que mostraba restos de Obsidiana; también existían minas de Obsidiana al norte del Pico de Orizaba de los mineros prehispánicos; un grupo de montañesas descubrieron fragmentos de obsidiana; en el sitio arqueológico de El Solitario se encontraron grandes cantidades de obsidiana, el material corresponde al Posclásico Temprano (850-1,250 dne); Amacuilecatl es un sitio asentado en el húmedo cráter a 4,320m en el flanco oriental de la montaña denominado Valle de Mirapuebla se encontraron dos fragmentos de Obsidiana prismática a diferentes niveles; etc.
