Leyenda Azteca sobre la aparicion del uso del fuego.
Hace mucho tiempo, no se conocía el fuego, y los hombres debían comer sus alimentos crudos.
Los Tabaosimoa, los Ancianos, se reunieron y discutieron sobre la manera de obtener alguna cosa que les procuraría el calor y les permitiría cocer sus alimentos.
Ayunaron y discutieron… y vieron pasar por encima de sus cabezas una bola de fuego que se sumergió en el mar pero que ellos no pudieron alcanzar.
Entonces, fatigados, los Ancianos reunieron personas y animales para preguntarles si alguno de ellos podía aportarles el fuego.
Un hombre propuso traer un rayo de sol a condición de que sean cinco para ir al lugar donde salía el sol. Los Tabaosimoa aprobaron la proposición y pidieron que los cinco hombres se dirigieran hacia el oriente mientras que ellos, llenos de esperanza, continuarían suplicando y ayunando.
Los cinco partieron y llegaron a la montaña donde nacía el fuego.
Esperaron la llegada del día y se dieron cuenta que el fuego nacía sobre otra montaña, más alejada. Retomaron entonces su camino.
Llegados a la montaña, en un nuevo amanecer, vieron el fuego nacer sobre una tercera montaña, aún más alejada. Prosiguieron así hasta la cuarta, después la quinta montaña donde, desalentados, decidieron regresar, tristes y fatigados.
Contaron esto a los Ancianos quienes pensaron que jamás podrían alcanzar el Sol. Los Tabaosimoa les agradecieron y se volvieron a poner a reflexionar sobre lo que podrían hacer.
Es entonces que apareció Yaushu, un Tlacuache sabio, y él les relató un viaje que había hecho hacia el oriente. Había percibido una luz lejana y quiso verificar lo que era. Se puso a marchar durante noches y días, durmiendo y comiendo apenas.
La noche del quinto día pudo ver que en la entrada de una gruta ardía un fuego de madera de donde se elevaban grandes llamas y un torbellino de chispas.
Sentado sobre un banco un hombre viejo miraba el fuego. Era grande y llevaba un taparrabo de piel, los cabellos blancos y los ojos horriblemente brillantes. De tanto en tanto alimentaba esta "rueda" de luz con leños.
El Tlacuache contó cómo él permaneció escondido detrás de un árbol y que, espantado, él hizo marcha atrás con precaución. Se dio cuenta que se trataba de alguna cosa caliente y peligrosa.
Cuando él hubo acabado su relato, los Tabaosimoa pidieron a Yaushu si él podía volver y traerles un poquito. El Tlacuache aceptó, pero los Ancianos y su gente debían ayunar y orar a los dioses haciendo ofrendas. Ellos consintieron pero le amenazaron de muerte si éste los engañaba. Yaushu sonrió sin decir una palabra.
Los Tabaosimoa ayunaron durante cinco días y llenaron cinco sacos de pinole que dieron al Tlacuache. Yaushu les anunció que estaría de regreso en otros cinco días; debían esperarlo despiertos hasta medianoche y si él moría, les recomendó de no lamentarse por él.
Portando su pinole, él llegó al lugar donde el viejo hombre contemplaba el fuego.
Yaushu lo saludó y fue solamente a la segunda vez que él obtuvo una respuesta. El viejo le preguntó lo que hacía tan tarde en ese lugar.
Yaushu respondió que era el emisario de Tabaosimoa y que buscaba agua sagrada para ellos. Estaba muy fatigado y preguntó si podía dormir antes de retomar su camino la mañana siguiente.
Debió suplicarle mucho pero al fin el viejo le permitió quedarse a condición de que no toque nada. Yaushu se sentó cerca del fuego e invitó al viejo a compartir su pinole.
Este vertió un poco sobre el leño, tiró algunas gotas por encima de su hombro, después bebió el resto. El viejo le agradeció y se durmió.
Mientras que Yaushu lo escuchaba roncar, pensaba la manera de robar el fuego.
Se levantó rápidamente, tomó una brasa con su cola y se alejó. Había hecho un buen pedazo del camino cuando sintió que una borrasca venía sobre él y vio, frente a él, al viejo encolerizado.
Él lo reprendió por tocar y robar una cosa que no le pertenecía; lo mataría.
Inmediatamente él tomó a Yaushu para quitarle el tizón pero aunque éste lo quemaba no lo soltaba. El viejo lo pisoteaba, le trituraba los huesos, lo sacudía y lo balanceaba.
Seguro de haberlo matado, se vuelve a vigilar el fuego. Yaushu rodó, rodó y rodó… envuelto en sangre y fuego; llegó así delante de los Tabaosimoa que estaban orando.
Moribundo les dio el tizón. Los Ancianos encendieron los leños.
El Tlacuache fue nombrado "héroe Yaushu".
Lo vemos aún hoy marchar penosamente por los caminos con su cola pelada.
Tlacuache: Mamífero arborícola.
Pinole: Bebida alcohólica a base de maíz.
