Cuando el poderoso emperador Moctezuma quiso saber dónde estaban sus antepasados llamó a su primer ministro y le dijo:
-Quiero saber dónde viven los antepasados del antiguo pueblo de Anahuac. ¿Dónde estará Quetzalcóatl, dónde la madre de Huítzilopochtli, dónde los fundadores de la gran Tenochtitlán?
-Señor –dijo el primer ministro–, lo que pides es imposible, esos santos varones y la madre de Huitzilopochtli viven en la lejana Tula, en la ciudad maravillosa, y absolutamente nadie puede llegar allí; el camino está cerrado y rodeado de bestias espantosas, océanos sin fondo y terribles peligros. Sólo por medio de poderes extraordinarios podríamos saber algo sobre nuestros antepasados.
Entonces, decidió consultar al antiguo historiador del Imperio y, según cuenta la leyenda se fue al pasado y se encontró cara a cara con un viejo inmortal a quien le preguntó:
-Dime buen anciano, ¿dónde viven hoy Quetzalcóatl, la madre de Huitzilopochtli y todos los santos varones de los antiguos tiempos?
-Poderoso emperador, ellos viven en la lejana Tula -le respondió el anciano. -Quisiera llegar allá –dijo del gran emperador.
-El camino está cerrado, no es posible; sólo introduciendo el cuerpo por medio de poderes extraordinarios dentro de la cuarta vertical podríais llegar a ese lugar.
Así, el anciano historiador le comprobó a Moctezuma que lo que le había dicho el primer ministro era verdad y regresó al palacio.
Días después, convocó al pueblo y a los sesenta ancianos, y les dijo:
-Quiero saber dónde viven los Dioses de Anahuac, quiero saber algo sobre Quetzalcóatl, sobre la madre de Huitzilopochtli y sobre todos esos santos y heroicos varones fundadores de la gran Tenochtitlán. Ustedes, ancianos, tienen la sabiduría que se necesita, les encomiendo esa labor y que lleven estos presentes para la tierra sagrada de la lejana Tula -y entregándoles los presentes, continuó-. Márchense.
Dice la leyenda que los sesenta se prepararon con mucho ayuno y abstinencia, impregnaron sus cuerpos con hierbas, y luego, haciendo sus mágicos círculos y usando sus poderes, metieron su cuerpo físico dentro de la cuarta vertical.
Viajaron por la dimensión desconocida hasta la lejana Tula. Al llegar ahí, preguntaron al anciano por los heroicos fundadores, y éste los condujo hasta el lugar donde estaba viviendo Quetzalcóatl y todo su séquito de heroicos y nobles varones mexicanos. Cuando marchaban hacia las casas de los legendarios señores, los pies de los sesenta se hundían en la arena y se les hacía difícil caminar.
-¿Qué pasa? -preguntó el anciano a los sesenta-o ¿Por qué no pueden caminar? ¿Qué es lo que comen ustedes? ¿Qué es lo que beben?
Los sesenta respondieron:
-Señor, nosotros bebemos mucho pulque y nos embriagamos, comemos carnes de caza y también fornicamos.
-Es por eso, ilustres varones -dijo él anciano-, que se les dificulta caminar en este lugar, vuestros presentes no son necesario para nosotros, porque vivimos una vida modesta, dormimos en el duro yermo y no necesitamos lujo.
En ese momento, una anciana salió al encuentro de los sesenta. Llevaba la cara tiznada con carbón, sucia y su vestido estaba todo rasgado. Era la madre de Huitzilopochtli, la deidad fundadora de la gran Tenochtitlán, era la divina madre triste porque su hijo había caído por la fornicación.
-Estoy triste -dijo ella-y así lo estaré hasta que mi hijo regrese, es decir, hasta que se eleve, se regenere, hasta que suba del lodo de la Tierra. Ustedes, si continúan así como van -dijo la madre de Huitzilopochtli-, pronto serán conquistados por hombres blancos y barbudos que vendrán del otro lado del mar y los destruirán -refiriéndose a los conquistadores de España.
Los sesenta conversaron con Quetzalcóatl y recibieron distintas enseñanzas. Después, la madre de Huitzilopochtli les entregó un braguero (símbolo de castidad) para que ellos, a su vez, se lo entregaran al poderoso Moctezuma, y los despidió haciéndoles llevar tan duro mensaje al emperador.
Regresaron los sesenta por entre la cuarta vertical, aunque algunos de ellos murieron durante el trayecto; pero quienes lograron volver a la gran Tenochtitlán, entregaron el mensaje al poderoso emperador. Entonces, él y su primer ministro, llenos de dolor, hablaron al pueblo para que dejaran la embriaguez del pulque y para que entraran por el camino de la regeneración. Pero todo fue inútil, ya la poderosa civilización solar que alguna vez había resplandecido en la gran Tenochtitlán y en otras ciudades cercanas había entrado en el proceso de decadencia.
