Leyenda sobre Tezcatlipoca

Cuenta la leyenda que Tezcatlipoca vagaba por las noches bajo la forma de un gigante, envuelto en un velo y llevando su cabeza en la mano. Los miedosos morían al verlo, pero los valientes lo agarraban y le decían que no lo soltarían hasta la mañana. El gigante suplicaba que lo soltaran. Si el hombre conseguía retener al monstruo hasta el amanecer, éste le ofrecía riquezas y poderes para que lo dejara partir. Entonces el hombre recibía cuatro espinas, le arrancaba el corazón y se lo llevaba a su casa. Pero al desdoblar la tela en que lo había metido sólo encontraba plumas blancas o una espina o ceniza o harapos.

 

Tezcatlipoca era el gran enemigo de Quetzalcóatl, cuyo mito evoca una gran lucha. Tezcatlipoca sólo deseaba la destrucción de los toltecas de Tula, es decir, de aquellos que veneraban Quetzalcóatl antes de llegar a ser, luego de la caída de los toltecas, una de las principales divinidades aztecas.

 

Un día, los habitantes de Tula vieron entrar en la ciudad a tres brujos, uno de los cuales era Tezcatlipoca bajo la apariencia de un hermoso joven. Éste sedujo a la sobrina de Quetzalcóatl, hija del rey Uemac, y en una gran fiesta bailó y entonó un canto mágico. Pronto fue imitado por un gran número de toltecas, a los que condujo hacia un puente que se hundió por el excesivo su peso, haciendo caer a la mayoría al río, donde fueron convertidos en piedras. Después apareció haciendo bailar en su mano un muñeco.

 

Maravillados los toltecas, se amontonaron tanto para ver el espectáculo prodigioso, que muchos murieron asfixiados. Entonces les dijo que debían matarlo por los males que había ocasionado. Lo mataron, pero enseguida su cuerpo empezó a exhalar un fuerte olor que hacía que muchos toltecas murieran. Después de tantas pérdidas, consiguieron echarlo de la ciudad cuando ya casi la había arruinado.
