Leyendas urbanas de Mexico
Todos los autores que se han ocupado de este caso, desde Escobar hasta García, pasando por Salazar, han cometido el mismo error informando que los sucesos ocurrieron el 22 de mayo de 1973. En realidad fue el viernes 18 de mayo cuando Miguel Ángel González conducía un camión cargado con cemento y 50 láminas de asbesto, sobre la carretera 95, de La Tinaja a Tierra Blanca, y observó unos diminutos hombrecillos que le hacían señas.
Según el relato que hizo González, al acercarse al poblado de Cintalapa, aproximadamente en el kilómetro 18 de la citada carretera, vio a cierta distancia un grupo de hombres, cinco en total, a mitad del camino, quealzaban los brazos en dirección del camión, por lo que disminuyó su velocidad, y cuando ya los tenía a unos 20 metros, pudo observar que se trataba de hombre muy pequeños, ni siquiera del tamaño de un hombre enano, y que parecían chaneques (duendes o gnomos).
De inmediato paró el camión y trató de perseguirlos, pero los chanques se dirigieron hacia un monte cercano cubierto de maleza, en donde se perdieron.
Cuando González regresó al camión, grande fue su sorpresa al encontrarlo envuelto en llamas azules. En unos pocos minutos, según González, todo fue destruido, incluyendo el cemento y las láminas de asbesto, estimándose los daños en 35 mil dólares.
El camión era propiedad de Abel López, vecino de Catemaco, en el mismo Estado de Veracruz.
Al poco tiempo llegó la patrulla de caminos. El chofer no cesaba de reetir que el camión cargado con láminas de asbesto y costales de cemento fue pasto de llamas azules a pesar de que dichos materiales no son combustibles. González declaró:
Iba a la altura del kilómetro 18 de la carretera La Tinaja a Tierra Blanca, acercándome al poblado de Cintalapa, cuando de pronto vi un grupo de gentes a la mitad de la carretera y por eso disminuí la velocidad. Cuando ya los tenía a poca distancia pude observar que se trataba de hombres muy pequeño, ni siquiera del tamaño de un enano. Estaban vestidos de una manera muy extraña. Parecían duendes o gnomos que venían a mi encuentro con los brazos en alto.
Ya muy cerca de ellos paré el camión. Parece ser que al bajarme sorprendía a aquellos hombrecillos con mi presencia. Entonces huyeron precipitadamente y se perdieron en la maleza.
Después de buscarlos inútilmente, decidí regresar, y grande fue mi sorpresa al contemplar el camión envulto en gigantescas llamas azules.
Aunque no sentía calor, esas llamas consumieron el camión con todo y carga, no obstante que era cemento y láminas de asbesto lo que transportaba.
