El llanto de la serpiente

Leyenda de Nicaragua sobre una serpiente encantada que vive en las aguas de la laguna de Masaya, y fue quien con su llanto lleno de agua la laguna. Hay quienes dicen que la han visto flotando y la describen con barba larga y cachos.

Cuenta la leyenda que habia dos jovencitas enamoradas del hijo del cacique Tenderí, pero solo una correspondida, la princesa de Jalata.

La mujer desdichada se juntó con otras tres amigas para conquistar al hijo del cacique. Y en busca de fortuna visitaron a una adivina quien les dijo que arriba en la montaña ubicada donde ahora es la laguna de Masaya, vivía una serpiente que mantenía encantado al hijo del cacique y mientras la serpiente viviera, el amor del joven nunca sería de otra mujer. Para lo cual tenian que amarrar a la serpiente en el tronco de un árbol de Guásimo con los cabellos de las cuatro mujeres hasta que la serpiente muriera y se rompiera el encanto. Una vez amarrada, la serpiente comenzó a llorar y llorar pero nunca murio y fue tanto su llanto que sus lágrimas formaron lo que hoy es la laguna de Masaya.
