De acuerdo con una leyenda urbana difundida en Madrid y otras zonas de España, Verónica es un personaje sobrenatural. Mediante prácticas espiritistas, algunas personas creen posible evocar su espíritu para efectuar consultas, relacionadas generalmente con el primer amor o la muerte (Pedrosa 2004: 88-90, 94). El ritual se presenta en diversas configuraciones, implicando el uso de objetos cotidianos, como un espejo, un libro (a menudo, la Biblia) y unas tijeras (en memoria de las que causaron la muerte a Verónica: Pedrosa 2004: 88-89, 92). Verónica mata a quien la ha invocado, normalmente con un arma blanca que se encuentre en las cercanías (cuchillos de cocina, navajas, tijeras…), que sale disparada y se clava en el corazón o el cuello de la víctima (Pedrosa 2004: 89-90 y 92).
La versión más común de la leyenda explica que se trata de una muchacha muerta durante la pubertad (a menudo, durante una sesión de ouija) y cuyo espíritu ha quedado atrapado entre el mundo de los vivos y el de los muertos. Sin embargo, algunas versiones la consideran hija de Satanás (Pedrosa y Moratalla 2002: 175 y 179; Pedrosa 2004: 91 y 94).
El personaje cambia con frecuencia de nombre (encontramos variantes como Carolina —Pedrosa 2004: 94— y Micaela —Pedrosa 2004: 95—) o se multiplica, normalmente bajo la forma de dos hermanas o amigas (así, en Pedrosa y Moratalla 2002: 184).
En EE.UU. hay una leyenda análoga protagonizada por Bloody Mary (“María la Sangrienta”) o Mary Worth, que ha servido de inspiración al relato de Clive Barker ¨Lo Prohibido¨, llevado al cine con el título Candyman.
No resulta fácil establecer el origen de la figura, ligada a la creencia, común en muchos lugares, de que las almas de los muertos se manifiestan en ocasiones en los espejos. Algunos han querido vincularla con santa Verónica (Pedrosa y Moratalla 2002: 98).
